MGMT released their first single in four years, "Little Dark Age," last Tuesday. It's an unusually dark song for normally bright and poppy MGMT. Icy synths weave throughout the track, reminding me of '80s goth bands like The Cure, and Depeche Mode. Despite the darker territory, MGMT still bring infectious melodies to the forefront, making "Little Dark Age" one of my favorite singles of the year. Their new album, Little Dark Age, is expected to release in early 2018. Upon hearing MGMT's newer, darker sound, I wondered if the lyrics had a similar tone. To find out, I analyzed "Little Dark Age" to see what themes I could find. I discovered four themes in "Little Dark Age": Death, Horror, Sadness, and Time. Below, you'll find my analysis, and the data I gathered to write my analysis. Death: x13
Horror: x9
Sadness: x9
Time: x7
Final Thoughts: The lyrics in "Little Dark Age" definitely match the music's nocturnal tone. I don't think the lyrics are meant to be taken completely serious though. MGMT have always brought whimsy to their music, and it's no different here. The song is undoubtedly dark, but there is a tangible hint of fun beneath all the darkness, like a party teetering on the brink of chaos. MGMT is reveling in their new sound.
